Quick Tips for Conducting a Simple Home Energy Audit

A home energy audit can greatly improve your home’s energy efficiency. Professionals often do this, complete with a detailed report. However, you can also perform a quick and simple energy audit if you want to get a sense of your home’s current state. Acorn Home Improvements, Inc., your window replacement contractor, shares some tips.

Take Stock of the Appliances and Electronics in Your Home

The appliances and electronic items you use in your home every day can put a big dent in your monthly energy use. Check each of them and find out which ones are using too much energy. Consider replacing appliances that are near the end of their life span with energy-efficient models. Look for the ENERGY STAR® labels when you shop for new ones. To conserve energy, use power strips in areas where you have lots of electronics.

Seal Air Leaks

A well-sealed home is an energy efficient home. Air leaks, however, are a problem you shouldn’t overlook because they waste energy by letting outside air in and indoor air out. Start by checking the weatherstripping on the door and window seals, replacing only if it is already worn down. Also, inspect wall cracks, gaps around plumbing pipes, and other tiny crevices for signs of air leakage. If you find one, use caulk or spray foam insulation to seal it.

Check the Insulation in Your Attic

One of the top reasons why a home can lack energy efficiency is poor insulation. Having adequate insulation in your attic ensures your home’s comfort by preventing heated air from entering indoors during summer and sealing warmth during winter. Remember that the insulation’s effectiveness is measured in R-value and is dependent on where you live. Your attic may require more insulation if you live in an area that experiences colder climates. Also, different materials have different R-values per inch.

These tips can give you a better understanding of your home’s energy efficiency. For a more accurate assessment of your home’s energy consumption, however, you must schedule a professional energy audit. In addition to exterior renovations, Acorn Home Improvements, Inc., is also certified to perform an energy audit throughout your home.
