4 Warning Signs of a Bad Siding Contractor

Shortlisting contractors is a crucial step in having your siding replaced. In addition to knowing the good qualities—proper licensing and insurance, manufacturer certification, a good reputation—you should also know the bad ones. Local siding and window replacement contractor Acorn Home Improvements, Inc. shares the warning signs that indicate a bad contractor.

1. No Customer Reviews — A good siding contractor should have no problems providing references, customer reviews, or a portfolio of their past jobs. Online reviews have become ubiquitous, and legitimate siding contractors would have a website, along with profiles on manufacturer websites and the Better Business Bureau. Avoid a siding contractor who can’t provide this information, or who brush it off as unnecessary.

2. Asking for Full Upfront Payment — A typical exterior renovations payment scheme starts with a downpayment upon signing the contract, one or more installments after certain milestones such as delivery of siding materials, and ends with a final payment shortly after completion.

Never do business with a siding contractor who insists on full payment upfront. Some may offer a discount “for a limited time”: a common pressure tactic. While not entirely a red flag in itself, you should also be wary of a contractor who wants a cash-only transaction, as it may indicate a contractor who doesn’t want a paper trail.

3. Insisting on an Expensive Product — Most siding contractors will offer products that will cater to every customer’s budget, give their customers pertinent information about the benefits of each, and ultimately let the customer make an informed decision. If a contractor seems to be insisting on top-tier products without giving you time to weigh its pros and cons, they’re obviously more concerned about making a sale.

4. They Give Off a Unpleasant Vibe — Your relationship with your contractor is not a one-off transaction. You’ll be working with them for several days during installation, and you’ll need to be in touch with them for after-sales service and warranty claims. Only work with a contractor that you feel comfortable working with.
